AL-MUKHTASAR (“THE COMPENDIUM”)

Oblong North African manuscript, probably from Morocco or Algeria: 104 ff., regular Maghribi script in black ink with multi-coloured illumination (incomplete, a.o. at the beginning). – Arabic manuscript of Al-Mukhtasar (“The Compendium”), the principal textbook of Islamic law (“fiqh”) according to the Maliki school of law, by Khalil b. Musa al-Jundi al-Maliki (d. 1365 or 1374 AD). Copy finished on 17 Ramadan 1209 AH = 7 April 1795 AD, by Muhammad b. al-Bashir […] al-Tilimsani. The “Mukhtasar of Khalil” is an epitome of shariah law according to the Maliki madhhab, and is by North and West African Muslims considered as the most authoritative legal manual. Several copies we found in libraries are also incomplete.
